Radionuclear FM (aka The Nuke) was named by Mattie McGruff (the godfather of the Nuke) due to it's close proximity to the Pickering Nuclear Power Plant. The Pickering Nuclear Power Plant is the oldest atomic-power plant in Canada. The original Nuke FM station broadcast in the Pickering region in the mid to late 90's until it stopped regular broadcasting sometime in 2000 (with the exception of a weekend or two and the occasional rebroadcasting of the Ottawa affiliate in 2002). It had large listenership amongst high school students and hipsters. On any given day McGruff and his fellow band of merrymen would throw down great tunes, have local bands play live shows on air, and have people call in and request songs from the DJs while his unknowing parent's were drinking massive amounts of coffee downstairs. It was revolutionary.

In October of 2002 DJ Elvis (aka DJ Halogen), formally of York University community radio station CHRY 105.5FM moved to Ottawa to develop a music project with one of the original Nuke DJ's. DJ Elvis had long been interested in pirate radio after seeing Pump The Volume as a young boy, and after hearing about "The Nuke" he wanted to do what he Mattie McGruff did. He bought station components over the internet, received hours of advice from Mattie and started broadcasting in an apartment in the east end of Ottawa with only1 watt of power on 88.3FM. The name "The Nuke" was used, paying homage the original FM station in Pickering. The debut broadcast was on October 25th, 2002. A month 1/2 later we upgraded to 40 watts of power. The new Nuke had a website, online radio feed, and a regular schedule with several DJs from the Ottawa area. From time to time Mattie McGruff would come up to Ottawa to throw down a set, or broadcast live from Toronto over the net to the Ottawa studio. On January 14th, 2003 DJ Elvis was visited by two dark haired men in suits and trenchcoats from Industry Canada. They advised him they had heard the station, seen the website, they even called it by name. "Are you the person who runs The Nuke"? The Nuke and ceased broadcasting that night.

April 1st, 2006, the Nuke resurfaces as Ottawa's underground station, playing exclusively over the internet.. This time modelled a little bit closer to commercial radio, with regular shows from a cast of misfits including The Highway Man, That Kidd, Issac Bickerstaff, DJ Elvis & DJ Kenobi. We rocked the house for over a year but ended it due to time restraints and bandwidth costs in June 2007.

Since then Radionuclear.com has been a lonely place, hosting only a few logos promising a return but never keeping it's promise. Then in October 2008 when some of members of Team Radionuclear released some recordings of Jams on the site. And we started getting hits again.

The Team Radionuclear website is now a place to reminisce about the good ol' days of pirate radio, and showcase some of the music and other art Team Radionuclear members produce.
